After the Nazis arrived in Austria in 1938, Sophie Klein and and her nine year old sister Hanna found themselves orphaned. Both their parents had lost their lives to the Nazis and Sophie knew she had to get Hanna out of Vienna. The couple who were rescuing children accepted Hanna and she sailed to America, frightened but assured that Sophie would find her and they’d be together again. When Sophie was contacted and asked to attend the British Embassy, she was recruited to work for the British government. After a long and stressful journey, she found herself in England, where she was tasked with working beside the Royal Librarian in Windsor Castle.Lacey Turner loved her grandmother who they all called Gubby and although she was in her nineties, Gubby still enjoyed getting together with her family – Lacey’s sister Jess, plus her husband and children; her daughter Alexa and of course Lacey. But she refused to talk to them about her past. So when Lacey discovered – accidentally – that Gubby had a sister in that long ago past, she decided to head to England to do some research. Lacey didn’t tell Gubby why she was going, as she didn’t want to upset her. But what Lacey discovered was mind-blowing. How would Gubby react to what Lacey had to tell her?The Royal Librarian is another outstanding historical novel by Daisy Wood and I loved it! Incredible history, with the royal sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, at young ages; Sophie’s work with cataloguing in the Royal Library; her position as Royal Librarian as she took the place of the last person – it all kept me glued to the pages. Both the young Hanna and Sophie are well crafted characters, along with current day Lacey. I’ve read two previous books of this author’s, giving them both 5 stars, and this one is no exception. Highly recommended.

The story begins in Vienna 1938 and the Nazis are welcomed for the majority but not all. The Klein family are fearing their fate being Mr. Klein is Jewish, even though his wife isn’t. She makes plans with her oldest daughter Sophie and with her younger daughter Hanna for them to escape while there is a chance. Things aren’t easy and also expensive and when at the hands of the Nazis her father dies of a heart attack and her mother is arrested and died mysteriously it is time. Hanna has a chance to escape and at the age of nine with fifty other children gained visas to America. As for Sophie it is a more difficult matter, but being that her mother was English and she spoke it well plus her background working at the library she was given a chance. Of course there is a catch, she needs to work for the British Intelligence. This is a dual timeline, the present, Lacey Jones finds a letter in her grandmother’s drawer and wonders why she never knew she had a great aunt. Being that her grandmother was upset about her going through her things she never mentioned the letter she found. Her career as a ghostwriter and being curious she begins a research and winds up in Windsor. To find a long lost cousin and to learn who her Aunt Sophie was.As always well written and having been in Vienna and Windsor was extremely of interest to me. I must admit the beginning was very similar to a previous book, but then one must remember the time period. Those who love WWII stories will definitely want to read #The Royal Librarian. Thank you NetGalley for this eARC. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story. #NetGalley #HarperCollinsPublishers

“we may never be able to forget the terrible things that were done to us, but at least we can forgive ourselves.”this is a beautiful story of past and present, trauma and triumph, love and loss. two timelines, two stories that seem so inconsequential.. yet come together so devastatingly captivating.anyone who loves historical fiction, especially those based during WW2, will no doubt enjoy this. it is clear the author did their research to be as historically accurate as possible while adding a beautiful story that fits so well within the timeline.i enjoyed the present day timeline and the way Lacey’s initial experience of the Windsor Castle almost mirrored Sophie’s. this book is also a reminder of how little we know of those who came before us and the stories we could be privy to in our own familial history. Gubby’s character reminded me of my own grandmother who was 10yo when the war ended. i was lucky enough to hear her own recollection of some events that traumatized her at the time before she passed.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 out of 5 stars, for sure! the writing is easy to follow. though i do wish Lacey’s dialogue was more fitting in the American sense, it all still flowed so well with the third person POV. the world building and atmosphere was done so vividly, in the past & present. the romance aspect was tastefully done and does not distract from the plot.would i recommend this? YES. whether it’s to read for your own pleasure, buddy reading, or even a book club… i think this would be amazing!a big thank you to NetGalley & Avon Books UK for allowing me the opportunity to read this as an ARC. i leave this honest review voluntarily.

Where should I start. I believe I already mentioned it once, that, actually, I wouldn’t say I like to read about the suffering and abuse of the wars, nevertheless, as I found out, that Daisy Wood is going to release a new book of hers I wanted to read it.Her books are incredible, past mixed with present times. The reveal of old family secrets or untold truths. Those stories make us think about the gruesomeness and horrors of the time of WWII and about how lucky we’ve been to live in times like these, although unfortunately there is always some war in the world.I would also like to say “hats off” to the author as the research that had to be done to get this book written, has had to be intense and deep.I have to admit I was smitten with the book’s main characters, Sophie’s dedication and loyalty to the new country and its people, which was out of this world, and Lacey’s commitment to keep digging to discover the truth.Anyway I would really like to say, that this book is worth to read.

  5. Jean Walters

The author brings in many characters and aspects of history to create an amazing story that brings our past to life. It is always hopeful that we learn important lessons from these stories… To hold judgement until we learn the truth, to place love as the most important element, and to seek the truth on all instances. Being ready to judge a person guilty without the facts is a way to fall from grace. Great flow and story.

I liked the way the past was woven into the present. How people whom Hitler tried to destroy overcame the pain & did’t let him completely destroy their lives. I liked the look into Queen Elizabeth’s young life & what a wonderful person she was. This book definitely deserved a 5 rating, a wonderful read, Thank you, Daisy Wood!

  7. Linda T.

This book was awesome! I enjoyed the historical aspect of it, and the way that it was telling two stories at the same time. I was wishing the story lasted longer.

The Royal Librarian was an interesting perspective of pre WW II from Austria, while a large portion of the story was centered in Windsor. The characters were so brave and made for a an easy read.

  9. Shari T

What a lovely story. So many twists and turns. Some you didn’t see coming. Jumping back and forth between today and the 1940’s and tying the two together was masterful.Don’t miss out on this story, smiling and tearing up through it all. Well worth it!

*4.5 stars.Overall, I enjoyed this book. Clearly the author researched Windsor Castle well. The basic story of two sisters separated during WW II is not an uncommon plot, but this one was intriguing, well written, and the reader could visualize what was going on without the author over-describing. Ms Wood did a good job incorporating contemporary events such as Covid and Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum jubilee, along with Lacey’s own story which is all too true for some young women these days. Nothing felt forced or rushed in this book. It held my interest.*The half-point off is for others to be aware. In my Kindle version there were no paragraph indentions or even space separating paragraphs . It all just ran together. The only way I knew there was a new paragraph coming was at the end of a sentence which left most of the line blank. The only way I knew there was a new section within a chapter was two blank lines. This could be an issue with the way my Kindle is set or the way this was formatted for Kindle. It did not appear that way in the “Look Inside.” It had indentions. I have never had this issue with other eBooks; therefore, I felt it was worth a mention.
