Clear book with pictures to match and not “out of reach” looks $$$. Great ideas and brainstorm jumping off points. Really enjoying it.Although I don’t like the negative comment about having a bar to block the view to the kitchen-it’s the best in-between of open concept and putting up a wall. I get lots of compliments on it and my kids eat there often.

Great book! I wish that I had this book when I built a new home a few years ago. I love Emily’s voice, she is so fun to read. The book is full of great information for not only new builds, but also for established home owners, or renters. As always with Emily, the photographs are gorgeous – great job Sara Liggoria-Tramp. Velinda Hellen has done her usual impeccable work in styling this book.

Love this book! It’s chock-full of beautiful interiors that provide loads of inspiration. The writing is straightforward, like getting advice from a trusted friend. It explains the many, many decisions that need to be made when renovating, from lighting plans to plumbing placement, in terms that are easy to understand. I think it’s a great primer to get you from dreams and ideas to planning your renovation, what kinds of decisions you will need to make and some advice on how to make them.

I have been looking for some motivation to get out of analysis paralysis to start my home updates. It takes much talent to make things seem simple. “The New Design Rules” provides an approachable, entertaining framework for learning to decorate and renovate intelligently. I believe I’ll be able to save a lot of time and money based on what I’ve picked up in the book. The book is beautiful and well-constructed. It seems built for multiple reads as a reference guide and light thumbing-throughs on leisurely days.

I am obsessed with home decor and home renovations, so I loved to buy all these type of books. Let’s just say I have a lot to compare too. I think this is a great read especially beginners that are not to sure about home decor. If you are someone that just can’t seem to pull things all together where it just missing something this is a great book for you. Also great coffee table book.

My daughter is an interior designer and was very excited to receive this book as a Christmas gift. It looks like a great reference for her. I’m an HGTV junkie and I enjoyed just flipping through it before I wrapped it.

I just bought my first house and this book is going to be so useful! Just hours after I’ve received it, I checked it to see the difference between roman shades and roman rollers. I know I’ll be going back to it over and over again, not only for the information and tips, but also the inspirational photos. Emily and her team found the more beautiful places to shoot, different than all the places we see everywhere in the internet, all looking the same. I I’ve been following Emily on her blog and social media for many years, and I am so happy to now own this great guide. Already ordered one for my friend!

The book is very well written in terms of anyone looking to reinvent or build a house. Filled with beautiful rooms and information on how to achieve this in your own houses.

I went through this book in a weekend, with a highlighter, pen, bookmarks, and a notepad a few weeks before we started demo on our guest bath and am so glad I did! I love her style and advise, and especially appreciate the freedom (and even encouragement) to break the “rules” in pursuit of personal style. Even with all of the online resources and pins at our fingertips, this book has stayed on the coffee table for a month and will stay there for the foreseeable future – at least until we wrap up all of the projects on our list. The tips and “by the numbers” breakdowns are super handy, too. I did order Joanna Gaines’ new book at the same time and the two books are not the same. Joanna’s is more about her style and some ideas I found interesting. Emily’s is various style examples and explanations, glossaries, options, and USEFUL info for anyone wanting to try something new. Very encouraging!

I read Emily’s blog regularly and still found this book super helpful. I think it is mainly geared towards beginners, either beginning an interest in interior design or beginning to design a room or home. I just moved into a new home and loved thinking through all the possibilities with the help of this book. It is NOT about tweaking what you already have/furnitures/soft goods/decorating. Instead, it is a book about proportions, layouts, and options, with lots of beautiful pictures that illustrate principles. The tone of the book is approachable and friendly, rather than aspirational or showcasing someone’s portfolio. My one criticism is that I sometimes wish Emily’s opinion was a bit clearer, rather than laying out all the options so evenly. I think that was intentional, as Emily often explains a ‘rule’ but then carefully backtracks the rule to explain that individuality and preference should rule the day. She is not designing your house, you are designing your house and she is there to cheer you on. This will be my go-to housewarming present for the interior design lovers in my life. I’ve already purchased 2 additional copies.
