Great speed, handy to carry, gets warm but not hot (with 2-3 GB of files).Beats all other (non-SSD) external storage I have hands down at writing small files. A lot of drives can write larger files quickly, but small files are the Achilles heel for most flash drives.Look at the scale at the left of the second image. There are a couple of drives that seem to keep up, but when copying a folder of 2500 images all less than 1MB, the Samsung maintained 12MB/s write speed while the others were about 8MB/s for the Sandisk Ultra Flair and about 4MB/s PNY Elite-x and down hill from there.

NO usb stick lives up to it’s data read/write speeds! This Samsung USB thumb drive is no exception! Below are industry standard speeds for the USB versions and below that I will list the speed, real world, of this Samsung 256GB driveTheoretical SpeedvsActual Transfer SpeedUSB 2.0 480Mbps 30MB/s or 57.2205 MbpsUSB 3.0 5Gbps 400MB/sUSB 3.1 10Gbps 800MB/sUSB 3.2 20Gbps 2000MB/sThe Samsung USB drive numbersTransferring 15 LINUX iso files from a NVME equipped new computer and the USB drive plugged into a USB 3.1 slot resulted in a speed of between 105 to 115 MbpsCrystal DiskMark numbersRead 412 MB/sWrite 116 MB/sYes I would buy it again, it’s at lease faster than my kingston drives and the price is VERY good for the size/capacity

I’ve been struggling to find a good thumb drive that is fast enough to boot my Ubuntu or other Linux partitions with their ext4 file systems, plus to have plenty of room left over for additional Fat32 and NTFS partitions for storing files for my Windows machines. This is it!The file write speed for a movie .iso file of about 4.5Gigabytes writes at about 100 to 107 Megabytes/sec. I felt that I should spell megabytes, abbreviated as MB, to avoid confusion that many advertisements take advantage of by using the term Mb which stands for megabits. (8 bits/byte for a stored file, but for any kind of data transmission, like over a modem, internet, between computers, and between computers and storage devices, like thumb drives, it takes one start bit, 8 data bits and ends with one stop bit. So that’s 10 bits per byte that needs to be sent and received. So a 100 Mb hub, only passes data at a 10 Megabyte/sec rate. A Gigabit router can only send and receive at 100 Megabytes/sec. Trust me. I’ve been fooled/dazzled/ and felt cheated by some misleading but technically true product advertising.I’m very pleased with my 256 Gigabyte Samsung thumb drive. Oops. No thumb drive, hard drive, nor solid state drive actually stores your data with a maximum capacity of their advertised Gigabytes do they? No they don’t. That’s another misleading “sales gimmick” that manufactures play on us. That’s because it takes up a lot of drive space to store its file system formatting information. Check this out: My 14 Terabyte hard drive can only store up to 12 Terabytes of data. What a rip off! Oh well. Yeah Yeah, this is not the forum for me to complain. Who’s going to read this anyway? Just kidding. Also, when I was transferring my movies and files to this thumb drive it only got warm to the touch. The last metallic thumb drive from another manufacturer that I returned to Amazon got too hot to touch and I worried about its possible shortened life. The warmer semiconductors get, the faster they degrade and become useless. The only negative comment I have about this thumb drive is that it has an open end. Since I carry it on my key chain, I cover the end with a tight-fitting cover that I took off of an HDMI cable. Believe me, lint will get in there and will interfere with the connection and you will think that your thumb drive has broken down. Again, that’s my experience with USB-type stuff in my pockets, like my cell phone!!Good luck!

Great built construction, Appearance is nice although that bulge in the back is a bit big for many cases, very good value for money.

Update: ordered 2 of these and this is a follow up after many hours of use.I was tired of the plastic case units that eventually would break a tab or not stay open, then there is the issue of extremely low transfer speeds. No more, got this unit and the transfer speed is excellent. The case is solid metal and offers great protection and a long life. Bought two of the 128GB and couldn’t be happier.Update to address some of the negative reviews.1) This does get warm. That is good, all chips heat up. Plastic case units do not radiate the heat and it is retired in the chip which can shorten its lie. A warm case means it is acting as a heat sink and protecting the unit.2) Yes it is a bit slippery, but there is a loop in the top where to can attach a thin lanyard or loop if needed. I have no problem with it.3) Compatibility. I have used this on MACOS, Windows Linux and IOS devices, both new (2 months) and old 6 years and have no issue with compatibility. Keep the unit formatted as ExFAT and you shouldn’t have any problem.4) Speed. The USB slot you plug into will control the speed. Use a USB3 for maximum throughput. Don’t blame the flash drive if you are seeing slow speeds on a USB2 slot.5) As with all flash drives, keep them away from static, don’t use them as a hockey puck and keep them dry.Bottom line: This is a very good Flash Drive

I am extremely pleased with this purchase. I use mine as my own personal radio station in the car (and I even set up playlists or can play by genre).Pros:- It’s metal (acts like a heat sink) and durable- It handles the hot summers (in Texas where it’s common to go over 100 degrees)- Works with every radio I ever tried even Chevy (not always the case with other USBs)- I can play songs from it for hours without ever having a single issue- Black and small so you don’t notice or see it (in case someone is looking in your car)- Has a built in keychain hole- Long lastingCons:- It’s not the absolute fastest write speed, but it’s still fast and fast enoughImportant:- Just make sure you format it to FAT32 or exFAT (depending on your radio)

Bought three of these Samsung BAR plus in 64GB, two for key chain use, one to have handy on my desk. Made sure Amazon was the seller to help avoid any risk of non-genuine Samsung parts. Just arrived and burned each one in briefly using CrystalDiskMark, so I could both be sure each worked and compare speeds between the units. All three tested within about 2% of each other on each benchmark. Importantly, the sequential read speeds exceeded the claimed 200 MB/s in each case, averaging 224 MB/s. Writes were all 34MB/s. All tests were conducted on my laptop, a Lenovo Flex5, on a USB 3.0 port. Clearly the sequential read speeds take advantage of USB3.0 bandwidth.Overall very pleased for the price and the key chain friendly stainless steel casing. Note I did put a cover on the USB end of each, using the covers from Honbay 40pcs Semitransparent Black and Clear Plastic USB Male Anti-Dust Plug Stopper Cap Cover . I wanted just a bit more protection when used on key chains from dents and the elements. These Honbay covers fit snugly yet come off relatively easily. These feel like TPR, which is good for grip and flexibility.Pros+Fairly fast overall for the price, and clearly very fast at sequential reads.+Good looking, tough stainless steel body+Great form factor for handling – only as wide as a USB port so they won’t cause any interference with adjacent ports, a bit longer than the really small USB drives designed to stay mounted all the time, but therefore very easy to get in and out, especially with the raised end near the lanyard hole providing a nice grip.+Hangs just fine on my key chain, a Maxpedition Gear Keyper Maxpedition Gear Keyper, Foliage Green using a FREEkey ring, the absolutely most secure rings you can buy in my experience FREEkey Accessory Ring Spares, 10 Count Cons-wish for faster write speeds-gets warm but not so hot as to be a concern so farNo data yet on reliability, will updated if I find any issues.CrystalDiskMark results, below…———————————————————————–CrystalDiskMark 6.0.0 x64 (C) 2007-2017 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : https://crystalmark.info/———————————————————————–* MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes/s [SATA/600 = 600,000,000 bytes/s]* KB = 1000 bytes, KiB = 1024 bytes Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 224.198 MB/s Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 34.365 MB/s Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 13.355 MB/s [ 3260.5 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 13.147 MB/s [ 3209.7 IOPS] Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 13.285 MB/s [ 3243.4 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 13.377 MB/s [ 3265.9 IOPS] Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 12.632 MB/s [ 3084.0 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 12.593 MB/s [ 3074.5 IOPS] Test : 1024 MiB [E: 0.0% (0.0/59.8 GiB)] (x5) [Interval=5 sec] Date : 2018/07/03 4:03:29 OS : Windows 10 Professional [10.0 Build 17134] (x64)
